Child Photography | What really happens

Something i don’t often get chance to do is just play, and this weekend with it being ‘Mothers Weekend’ ( Because a day simply isn’t enough! šŸ˜€ ). Sophie wanted to come to work with me which i was apprehensiveĀ about at first because i was expecting “can we go get something to eat” “I’m bored now what can i do” “Can i have your phone” “How much longer” “Can i go on Youtube”…you know the usual complaints.

But she was brilliant, helped out doing the music and choosing outfits for the clients she was a pleasure to have around plus we had time to have a little play. I’ve had some new backdrops and i wanted a few images of them for my website…….so i had an idea of what i wanted……..but with children what you end up with is very different to what you get!

Everytime i tied a headband or did her hair she would either start dancing, fidgeting or moving to how she thought would look best….and ‘My Vision’ was quickly disintegrating!

SO in the end i had to resort to Bribery and told her a trip to Waterstones would be on the cards later (which i was going to do anyway because she had been such a good assistant but it was meant to be a surprise) if we got a few photos.

And in her moments of stillness when she looks right through my camera to me i had what i wanted šŸ˜€

A couple of years i did a shoot with my sister in the studio but we had always talked about doing somethingĀ less poised and more free spirited, something to capture an essence of her rather than just a face in front of a camera.

So in September this year we managed to snatch a couple of hours together (never easy when we have 4 kids between us and live an hour apart!) and we disappeared up a mountain šŸ˜€

It was about 5pm by the time we got to the summit and the sun was just slipping down towards the horizon, casting a beautiful glow across the purple heathers (or poopoo heaters as my amazing Polish friend calls them šŸ˜€ Kamila Ā Kosior… i love your English!! šŸ˜€ ) along the rocks.

We just talked and walked and i took photos along the way, she made it easy becauseĀ her infectious smile makes a perfect picture every time.

For Ā most of the photos i made sure she had the sun behind her because i wanted to overexpose .. i wanted this heavenly hazy spill of light around to giveĀ her a glowing outline.

As usual i hulked a bag of lenses up with (because come on…you never know where you may end up…..usually with a gammy shoulder lol ) but i only used the wonderful 50mm 1.4 Sigma Art, my lens of choice at the moment…and it didn’t let me down šŸ˜€
